Scitech 2010 Science Awareness Festival in Kalgoorlie, 24th – 26th March, 2010, at the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame.
Dear Potential Stallholder,
Scitech is holding our 2010 Science Awareness Festival in Kalgoorlie, 24th – 26th March, 2010, at the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame.
This will be our 7th festival with previous festivals being held in Kalgoorlie (inaugural festival held in 2004), Karratha, Esperance, Geraldton, Bunbury and Albany.
The key aims of the festival are to showcase to secondary students the sheer number of jobs that use science and technology, in particular within the local region, and how, by maintaining science and maths as subjects throughout high school, the students' options for careers increase. The other underlying key message is that the students don't necessarily have to complete tertiary studies in science to use science in a job, and that by having an understanding of science this will assist them in making decisions that may affect how they live their lives.
This festival is a great way for your organisation to connect with approximately 1500 students from your local region to increase their awareness about local science careers and provide an opportunity for the community to engage with local, regional and state-based science research, issues and achievements.
The 2010 event will comprise 3 aspects:
1. The 3 day 'careers expo' where approx 1,500 students from Kalgoorlie & outlying regions will attend the Mining Hall of Fame. The schools are timetabled to visit in 2 hour sessions between 9am and 3pm each day. The expo hosts local stallholders showcasing in an interactive way, how an interest or qualification in science can lead to interesting work and some not-so-typical 'science jobs'. As part of the 2 hour sessions, students attend short talks by the stallholders whereby images and video and an informal presentation allows the students to get an understanding of the pros and cons of the jobs, what study is involved and how they could get there themselves.
2. An evening community event, where the careers expo is opened to the general public, allowing parents to attend with their children and become more informed about science careers choices for their children.
3. Professional Learning for teachers - a full day of workshops for teachers incorporating fun, easy to teach science lessons to be held at a local school at a time to be determined.
Please contact me for further information and booking forms. It is free of charge to have a stall at our festival.
I look forward to your organisation participating in the 2010 Scitech Science Awareness Festival.
Kind regards
Amy Gornall

Sustainable Mining 2010 The Compelling Business Case 20 – 22 October 2010, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia
Conference Overview
In a mining cycle where maintaining profitability is becoming a greater challenge,
mining operations are being impacted upon by the operational pressures of competing
for scarce resources, especially in regional and remote settings.
One of the common struggles is to ensure there is a fair balance between Social,
Environmental and Economic considerations (the three pillars of sustainability).
To support a compelling business case, we must strive to improve our processes,
technology and quality of product, whilst managing limited human resources, services,
infrastructure, stakeholder concerns and costs.
Delivering returns to the proponent, community and government; and ensuring an
adequate return for the proponent from competing projects within its corporate pipeline.
Mineral resource projects are becoming more remote, deeper and complex in
mineralogy and tenor. Project permitting is dependent upon resolution of those
planning and environmental issues that require intensive stakeholder consultation and
result in unmanageable delays for the issue of permits.
Sustainability requires the triple bottom line to achieve the corporate mission, deliver
shareholder value, maintain safety and environmental targets, and ensure community
and regulatory expectations. There is competition for scarce internal and financial
resources and challenges in securing stable supplies of infrastructure, services and
people. Projects are being deferred or discarded, because they cannot justify the
business model.
There needs to be a concerted effort from industry, government and community, to
develop a cooperative approach to achieve sustainability. Decision making needs to
balance stakeholder interests with the compelling business case to ensure win-win
outcomes.
This conference will outline and review a number of issues impacting on the mineral
resource industry and its ability to maintain sustainable mining.
This is more than a Technical Conference, Sustainable Mining 2010 includes:
• Mine tours at Australia’s largest gold and nickel mines
• WDTT – Overview of Resource Development Projects in WA
• Technical Program on Sustainable Mining
• Geology of the Archaean and its Mineral Deposits Field trip
• Information and Training Workshops
• GME – Australia’s Largest Regional Mining Expo
